Opuntia leptocaulis - Pencil cactus
Opuntia leptocaulis - Pencil cactus
I got this particular plant from a park in Kingsville, Texas. I imagine everyone but me calls it a weed, and I've started to come around to that viewpoint. Even with ideal care, it's a plant that few but its mother could love, and probably not even her. It tends to get random woody patches, random dead patches, and there are spines everywhere. Everywhere. Tiny, vicious, hate-you-and-all-your-kind spines.
Just for a lark, I put some at the base of a palm that I keep moist and shady, and the darn thing seems happy. If I wasn't such a plant freak it'd be straight to the compost bucket for Mr. Pencil Cactus, but as it is I just watch where I put my hands. Which I do anyway because south Texas is yellow jacket Heaven. Sigh.
