Kalanchoe thyrsiflora
Kalanchoe thyrsiflora
Kalanchoe thyrsiflora is an easy plant to grow. It can take lots of water if it must, but does best with occasional deep watering. It is tolerant of poor soil, even seeming to prefer it. If grown in minimal light, it is a soft green with white sprinkles. If grown in full sun, the leaf margins get fiery red. If grown in full sun and minimal water, the whole leaf gets a funky shade of red, reminding me of a bad burn I got once. It pups freely and the pups are easy to grow; just setting them on top of the soil is enough. It will also grow from leaf cuttings. As Kalanchoe thyrsiflora ages, it develops a fine white powder on the stems. Lots of fine white powder. What's up with that?
If you pick the pups and let one Kalanchoe thyrsiflora grow alone, it develops a nice thick stem, putting me in mind of an alien tree. Maybe that's just me.
Kalanchoe thyrsiflora will put out some funky little flowers on a stem that can grow six feet up from the middle of a six inch tall plant. The flowers open up from the bottom of the inflorescence and it keeps growing taller, putting out more flowers, for up to six months starting in mid to late summer. I haven't tried to grow the pinpoint size seeds because these plants have pupped so much that I now have Kalanchoe thyrsiflora in a flower bed, around the foundation of the house, and the garage, and along two fences, etc...etc...etc...
