Hamatacactus setispinus
Hamatacactus setispinus
Hamatacactus setispinus like full sun but can grow with less than half a day of sun. Water-tolerant in the spring. Mine don't get much more than about 6 inches tall and about 4 inches wide before they start to...kind of fold...almost like a large invisible weight is pushing straight down on them from above. After that starts it's all downhill until they are just too ugly, then too dead.
They start throwing off big yellow flowers when they are only a couple of months old and are self-pollinating. Bees love them, as do bumblebees. They only take a few weeks after that to produce red, seed-filled pods than germinate easily.

Hamatacactus setispinus pup
I didn't think these would ever pup, but this one did.
